Amstel Gold Race Toerversie training plan 2027

Saturday 17 April 2027, Valkenburg. 240 km with 2,715 m of climbing.

In short

Give yourself 12 to 16 weeks for the Amstel Gold Race Toerversie, the tour ride on the pros' course, on Saturday 17 April 2027, which means starting between late December and late January. The 240 km from Valkenburg crosses the short, steep hills of South Limburg, from the Geulhemmerberg in the first few kilometres to the Kruisberg, the Eyserbosweg, the Keutenberg and the Cauberg near the end, with 2,715 m of climbing on the 2026 route, still shown for 2027. Places are drawn by lottery: register free by 31 October 2026. Build long rides with repeated short climbs, and practise hard efforts of one to three minutes. On WattPlan's model of the course, a rider with an FTP of 230 watts weighing 75 kg rides it in about 9 h 38 min, and takes 7:47 on Keutenberg at about 173 watts.

Your power and time on each climb

Enter your FTP and weight and WattPlan's route model rides the course for you the way a long day is best ridden: harder on the climbs, where a watt buys the most speed, and easier on the flat, at an effort you can hold to the finish. The figures below are for 230 W and 75 kg until you do.

How long to train for the Amstel Gold Race tour

Twelve to sixteen weeks of structured training suits most riders for the 240 km, which means starting between late December and late January for 17 April. The 150 and 125 km routes need about ten to twelve, and there are also 200, 100 and 65 km routes.

Enter the lottery first: registration is free and open until 31 October 2026, and the draw is in the week of 2 November. WattPlan then builds the weeks from today to 17 April around the days you can ride, runs the indoor sessions on a smart trainer in the app, and adjusts the plan when a week goes wrong.

The hills of South Limburg

The climbs are short rather than long: most take two to five minutes, and the longest, the Vaalserberg up to the Drielandenpunt, where the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet, is 4.8 km. The hardest come late, inside the last 40 km: the Kruisberg, 0.7 km at 8.3%, the Eyserbosweg, 1.1 km at 7.9%, and the Keutenberg, 1.6 km at 5.5% with 100 m at 16.7%, before the Cauberg, 1.2 km at 5.5%, close to the finish.

Train for the shape of the day: long rides with repeated hard efforts of one to three minutes, recovering on the roads between. Fit a gear low enough for the steepest ramps, and ride the first climbs well within yourself, because there are more than twenty of them.

The course on this page

The organiser still shows its 2026 routes for 2027, marked subject to change, and the newest route file it has published for the 240 km is from 2022. That file climbs every climb in the table, in the same order as the 2026 list, so the calculator rides it. The 2026 list also names the Maasberg, the Gemmenicherweg and the Schanternelsweg, new in 2026, which the table leaves out: the 2022 file does not ride the Schanternelsweg, and the published figures for the other two describe more than the tour rides.

The organiser publishes no figures for the tour's climbs, so the table's are climbfinder's. Its steepest is over 100 m, so the steepest few metres are steeper. We'll update this page when the 2027 routes are out.

Open roads, feeds and timing

The roads stay open: traffic rules apply, ride two abreast at most, and in 2026 the Cauberg was one-way uphill on the day. In 2026 the 240 km had six feed stations, from Ulestraten to Heerlen; the 2027 locations are emailed to riders just before the event. The ride is not timed, and no time limit has been published for 2027.

The calculator above rides the course on your own: in the groups on the flatter roads between the climbs you will be quicker than it says. Eat little and often, around 60 grams of carbohydrate an hour, because with a climb every few kilometres there is little time to eat on the hills.

Your plan to 17 April

WattPlan builds the weeks from today to Saturday 17 April 2027 around the days you can ride, and eases off before the day. Take a rider with 230 W of FTP who rides 3 to 5 hours a week now and has an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays and up to 6 hours on Saturdays: a 16-week plan starting Monday 28 December 2026 has 6 weeks of base, 6 of build, 3 of peak and 1 of taper. It opens at 4 hours a week and builds to 11, with a longest ride of 6 hours. Pick your own days below to see yours.

Free to start, and the Amstel Gold Race Toerversie is filled in for you. Premium adds the whole plan to race day and adjusts it when you miss a session or ride harder than planned.
