There's nothing quite like the misery of bonking 60 miles from home - legs empty, vision narrowing, every pedal stroke an effort of will. The good news? Bonking is entirely preventable with proper fueling. Here's how to eat and drink your way through long endurance rides.

Why Fueling Matters for Endurance

Your body stores carbohydrate as glycogen in muscles and liver. These stores are limited - typically 400-500 grams, enough for roughly 90-120 minutes of moderate-intensity riding before depletion.

Once glycogen runs low, you're forced to rely primarily on fat oxidation, which can't support the same power output. The result is the dreaded "bonk" - sudden, profound fatigue that transforms even gentle pedaling into a survival exercise.

The solution: consume carbohydrates during the ride to spare glycogen and extend your fueling runway.

Pre-Ride Nutrition

2-4 Hours Before

Eat a substantial meal with easily digestible carbohydrates:
